Prof. Dr. Jens Grundei

Curriculum Vitae

Prof. Dr Jens Grundei is professor for Business Economics, in particular Corporate Governance & Organisation at Quadriga University of Applied Sciences Berlin.

Jens Grundei studied business economics at the Technische Universität Berlin (TU/University of Technology) and – through a DAAD scholarship – at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. In 1999, he obtained his doctorate and in 2005 his habilitation in the field of business economics.

Professor Grundei possesses intensive teaching experience in the areas of strategic corporate management, organisational design and organisational behaviour. In 2008, he was offered and accepted a professorship at the FOM University of Applied Sciences in Berlin with a focus on the topics of organisation and personnel. It was there that he was also elected director of studies for FOM’s master programmes.

Professor Grundei’s areas of work centre upon organisational design, corporate governance and strategic management, he also researches and consults in these areas of expertise, e.g. having published three books and more than 50 articles. As a member of the task force “Organisation” of the Schmalenbach-Gesellschaft für Betriebswirtschaft (Schmalenbach association for economics) and further having a seat on the board of the gfo – Gesellschaft für Organisation (Society for Organisation), he is particularly fond of the topical exchange in the field of business organisation between academia and professional practice.

Research

Professor Grundei is specifically concerned with the structuring and steering of complex organisations. Here, he focuses on the targeted development of organisations, which is initially led up to by first and foremost developing a convincing strategy. The approach to be followed herewith is an intended-rational one, so as to be able to develop a strategy foundation as comprehensive as possible.

Corporate Governance builds the institutional framework within which the strategy is to be developed, it depicting the legal and factual mechanisms that regulate the competencies and relationships between the participants involved and which thus set the framework for the strategic development of the company. In terms of strategy implementation, Professor Grundei mainly focusses on shaping a corporation’s structural and management organisation which – in accordance with further development tools – is ultimately to influence the behavior of the members of the organisation

Current requirements and developments regarding company organisation

Given the major importance of company organisation and with it the complexity regarding the problematic nature of its structuring, the obvious and rather persistent question and demand for particularly suitable organisational structures arises – especially in large, internationally operating corporations. The latest survey dealt with current challenges and developments regarding organisational design that are already underway and was conducted in association with the work group “Organisation” of the Schmalenbach-Gesellschaft für Betriebswirtschaft (Schmalenbach association for economics). The most current approach addresses the search for possible ways of promoting innovation within organisations.

Organisation of Corporate Communications

The field of corporate communications has gained significant importance throughout the past years and meanwhile plays an essential role for many corporations. The consistent information given by various stakeholders alone imposes increasing requirements on the efficient organisation of the various communication activities, “especially in large, international corporations”. Against that background, a research project is to work out the specific challenges regarding the organisation of corporate communications and particularly the structuring solutions of the corporate practice.

Structural vs. Process Organisation

The implementation of process-oriented forms of organisation causes serious problems in the field. So it needs to be clarified how the ratio of competencies between process-oriented roles and positions in the organisational structure can be determined frictionless. In the first instance, the project is to show to what extent the integration of structural and process organisation can succeed respectively whether problems actually occur.

Cooperation partners: Prof. D.Eng. Uwe Dombrowski, managing director of the Institute for Production Management and Operations Research at the University of Technology Braunschweig and Prof. D.Eng. Paul R. Melcher, Bonn-Rhine-Sieg University of Applied Sciences.

Community and Partner

A professor’s work requires a thorough integration into all relevant communities. Thus, professor Grundei cultivates numerous contacts to colleagues at other universities as well as in the corporate practice area. Within the science community, he has frequently worked as a referee for magazines such as Organization Science, Journal of Management and Governance and the German-language magazine Führung und Organisation.

Also as a member of the work group “Organisation” of the Schmalenbach-Gesellschaft für Betriebswirtschaft e.V. (Schmalenbach association for economics) and as a board member of the gfo – Gesellschaft für Organisation (Society for Organisation), he maintains intensive interactions within the corporate practice area.
